I was noticing that Austin has some bus stops with NO SHELTER. Just a small bench sitting out in the open. So people must sit in the hot sun or rain with no place to get shelter. And then we wonder why more people don't ride the bus. Why does the Austin City Council want to spend $1.4 billion on rail and ignore the needs of bus riders? Bus stop shelters would cost a tiny fraction of a rail station.

Actually, outfitting every stop with shelters would cost more. CapMetro has over 2600 stops.

Why spend bunches of extra money on shelters at a stop that no one would ever use (there are stops with no boardings, one spends time waiting there, only exits)? Instead, do what Capmetro _already does_. Spend money on shelters at heavily used stops.

I agree not a good use of money. Also many stops are in neighborhoods where there limited space and low ridership. For rain carry an umbrella.

I get that you (and others) are against Prop. 1, but do you really have to post a new thread roasting it every week?
Your opposition is noted

Most of them have a shelter. But some don't, and I see people standing in the sun every time I drive down south Congress. So yes, people do use stops with no shelter. I've seen them.

There are so many better options when you have $1.4 billion to spend. We could use a lot more threads discussing those options.

We don't have 1.4 Billion to spend. We're discussing spending 600M on rail. If we don't do rail, it's not like we have 1.4B for something else. We only get the FTA matching for rail (or other similar transit project).

This rail does not appear to be something that will cover a lot of ground...so I don't understand why it's even good.

Federal funds are readily available by the billions. Not just for rail.

You don't have 600 million either.

It's not as if the city earns and saves money. It taxes and spends. The city is looking to taxpayers to fund its spending spree. This spree will cost a lot more than 600 million if the rail tax passes. This tax isn't going to result in the improvement touted.

Looking forward to hearing results around 9 pm on November 4, 2014.
