Southeast Austin is where you should look.....You might be able to find a small, older home to rent along Bluff Springs from William Cannon to Slaughter. Schools are bad, and resale value isn't great so you won't hear it hyped up on here. The location is as close to downtown as you can get for the $, and not too bad as far as traffic is concerned. You would be close to East Austin and its nice little jazz scene.
I would avoid Round Rock altogether, its a black hole that will suck all the coolness from you.....
