Here's what I compiled a few months ago. Everyone should call around and put some pricing pressure on these companies since wholesale propane prices have plummeted. Retail pricing should be $1.25 by now.

Hi everyone - we needed to setup propane service, so I called around to the companies I could find in the Austin area. Below are all the prices I was quoted (most for a minimum of a 150 gallon delivery). Best price is Direct Propane ($1.70/gallon). Hopefully this helps someone.

Action Propane — $2.00/gallon

Direct Propane — $1.70/gallon

Absolute Propane — $2.10/gallon

Garnett’s — $2.59/gallon

O’Brien Propane — $1.85/gallon

Ferrell Gas — $2.59/gallon / $2.29/gallon

Sharp Propane — $2.29/gallon

Modern Propane — $1.86/gallon

Amerigas service is atrocious!

And they WILL gouge for price unless you are proactive and force them to price match. When my tank is empty I will be inviting them to come get it --which they don 't like to do -- or sell it to me.

I sure wouldn't hold my breath for that price. Even if they got if for free, they won't make a huge profit delivering a hundred gallons at a stop.

It's not exactly like buying it at the corner gas station...with four stations in competition and prices posted for everyone to see.

Default Much Maligned Propane Company Called, special offer $1.49

The same company I have used for about 15 years, Said $1.49 a gallon. Sure I said. They should be here later this week. This company has always done me right. BTW, I own the two above ground tanks that are at my residence. Having extra capacity gives me flexibility for waiting to get special offers from them or wait till heat of summer when prices are generally lower.

Paid $1.85/gall to O'Brien in Dripping this past weekend.

I don't bother calling around because I know he's not the cheapest, but I also know from experience that he provides an extremely high level of personal customer service, and that's worth $0.10-0.15/gallon to me.
