I had folded this question into an earlier thread, but it got lost in the shuffle. (It was perhaps the less interesting of my questions.) So I'm going to try again with this in its own thread.

Is anyone familiar with someone who is an expert in rare/old/out of print books? Some books you can get an idea of value by looking on Amazon and Ebay, and this has helped me to weed out books that have no real value, but other things just aren't on there. I know there are used/rare book stores out there, and I could take a few things in, but I am wondering if anyone knows of someone who is skilled and trusted.

Don't know anyone specific, but HalfPriceBooks does have a rare/specialized dept in some of the stores. I am sure they have a resident expert you can locate by calling one of the stores.

Now that I'm typing this, I've visited this place and they are very serious about rare books: 12th Street Books - About Us

Good luck.

Yes, the Half Price Books on Lamar has a good rare books dept. You also might check at South Congress Books

Well, if my hours of TV watching research have taught me anything --

You should take it to a pawn shop. The owner will then call an expert in to "check it out" and they'll come over immediately and tell you all about the book and what it is worth.

(But seriously, if you haven't already you might check out the HP books location on N Lamar as others have mentioned. I've seen $10K+ books in their rare books section, so they may actually have some good knowledge on old books)
