Downtown

According to this, an additional 3,000+ rooms are coming online by 2016. This brings the total to around 11,000 rooms Downtown by the end of next year.

Does anyone know how this compares to the other major Texas cities? I know Houston, even with the several thousands of units under construction in their downtown, will only have 7,500 units in 2016 and their occupancy rate is nowhere near the rate in Austin. I'm just curious to see where Austin is relative to the other cities in Texas regarding inventory in the downtown market.

Any time there is a huge event like SXSW, COTA, Fun Fun Fun Fest, ComicCon, ROT Rally or big conventions then the hotels will raise rates above $300 downtown. As soon as event is gone, rates go down until next big hit. New hotels in the suburbs are popping up daily and currently being built out. I guarantee you they aren't full and under $200 unless it's SXSW or COTA. Where do these guests have to be for the wedding day festivities/dinners? If we knew that, we may be able to make some good suggestions.

FYI, a motel at the corner of IH35 and Oltorf just finished a major renovation and is getting rave reviews. Best Western Plus at 2200 So. IH35 at Oltorf

My daughter was just telling me that she saw a news story about a new hotel coming to town that will have a$1000 a night rate. She could not recall the hotel name, so I tried to look it up on google. I did not find it, but I found several stories about the hotel boom in Austin and a couple that were proclaiming the average 2015 room rate to be $340 per night.

I am glad I don't have to rent a room here. I will stick to my Washington DC rate of $83 at the Hilton chain shops.

The Driskill is probably one of the more expensive hotels - don't know about $1000/night but it's quite a place.

They are building a Hotel Zaza here. The average room in their Houston or Dallas hotel is around $300/night, but they have some "speciality" rooms that are $1000/night.

Probably what she was referring to.

Try the Wyndham Garden Inn off I35, and flyertalk a discount code (67243 is active right now).

Just checked and it was $126/night. The restaurant sucks but there could be worse problems.

Probably better off going with a vacation rental where you can rent a whole apartment or home. I've used VRBO - The Most Popular Vacation Rental Site in the US and HomeAway: Vacation Rentals, Beach Houses, Cabins & More. Both are headquartered here in Austin vs airbnb. They also don't charge travelers a booking fee like airbnb does.
