I posted this in the Dallas forum before I realized I should have posted here.

I'm relocating from MN to Temple, Texas and have just had the experience of my life with the deregulated electricity. In MN there is ONE electric company so it was a daunting task to figure out what electric company to use. I was surprised that they even have plans that assess a fee if you use too little electricity.

I am moving to a studio apartment (400 sq) and have a 7 month lease. For this reason I didn't get a contract because the lowest one was 12 months. I think that the total cost of each kwh ended up being 12.9 with all the fees charged. Apparently there are fees for the electric and the poles? Very confusing. I choose this plan because there was no minimum contract and no cancellation fee. He said that I could switch to a different plan at anytime with no penalty. This is with Reliant as I was nervous to go with anyone else. The whole process took over an hour to set up and came with a massive amount of terms and conditions and I have no idea what I agreed to.

My question is how many kwh do you think a 400 sq ft apartment would use? I assume 12.9 is very high to pay but I'm really not sure. A friend who has a mobile home in Texas said her electric costs between $200-300. I'm getting very nervous I will need a second job to pay for my electric.

Any advice is appreciated.

Energy usage is so personally variable that it is very difficult to predict usage for anybody, but it is likely a safe bet that a 400 ft apartment is going to use quite a lot less energy than a mobile home.
