I just heard this on the news recently. Burglars are kicking in doors in Hyde Park during the day and grabbing what they can. Yikes, that's scary. Makes me glad that I decided to move to a master planned community. It might be bread and butter and cookie cutter but at least it's not the city. Everyone wants to live Central but with this happening how could you want to, especially if you have children?

I live near downtown Atlanta right now and we have the same crap going on. One of the reasons we're moving to Austin. I hate to hear this! Course we're not moving to Central Austin, but still!?!? Damn crooks...

Is this type of crime a "leading" or "trailing" indicator for the economy? I am sure I don't want the answer either way!

My neighborhood has been "up and coming" and transitional for years. The past year has seen a surge of activity of which I haven't seen in my 11 years here. I'm not sure what the motivation is, but a lot of our crime is from high school kids cutting school, knocking on doors to see if someone is home and then kicking in the back door of those homes that are empty. We even had an incident where someone was home but didn't answer the door, the kids started to enter, the homeowner fired rounds, striking and killing one of the three guys. We were hoping that would calm things down but the crime continues...

the kicking down of doors and robbing of houses is definitely not limited to the city. the same thing just happened across the street from my parents' house (which is tucked away in an atlanta suburb). a guy parked his van in the cul-de-sac, went up to the neighbor's door (kicking it in when no one answered), and promptly set off the alarm system. i'm thinking this may be more a sign of the times than a location-specific phenomena.

Yeah, a few years ago in Circle C/Western Oaks, there was a rash of 'garage' burglaries, with a group (apparently) driving around and taking stuff out of open garages, often while the owner was in the back yard doing yard work. Very brazen and dependent on getting in and out quick.

Yeah but the homeowner left their garage open. That could happen anywhere. Kicking in locked doors is way different. Woo hoo for security systems.

There have been some break ins in Hutto too, but thankfully not very many. Did ya'll hear the story on the news about the teenager chasing the burgler away with his baseball bat? They played the 911 call.

Crime happens anywhere, even in the precious gated communities (if people want in, they will get in). Anyone who is terrified of the bad guys might as well live on their own island somewhere.

Hyde Park is an amazing area and I would much rather my kids grow up in a place like that than in the suburbs.

We live in Hyde Park and it is a great place for our grand daughter to be growing up. That said, according to the police, there were 17 of the door/window smashing burglaries in November alone. That is an epidemic and it doesn't help much to be told that it could happen anywhere. When we lived in Mexico and crimes would occur that affected the expatriate community, folks would comfort themselves by saying such crimes also occur in the USA. My response was always "So what?"
