I'm going to be taking a trip with my kids to see family in Minnesota for about a month. My husband doesn't have many friends and is shy. He's very anxious about being alone and having nothing to do while we are away and he isn't at work. He considered volunteering and taking on extra work stuff if he can. Anyone have ideas of what he could do to keep busy. He likes exercise and sports. He swims during lunch, sometimes goes bike riding(not like those in the clubs, but just for fun and can go for quite a few miles) and is taking a once a week rowing class through his work healthy living program.

We live in north Austin and he works in downtown Austin.

Thanks.

He can go on a bike ride with Social Cycling Austin, a volunteer-led group that organizes various rides throughout the week:

There's a Saturday morning ride called the "Saturday Caffeine Cruise" that he could go on

Does he like dogs? Both the Austin Animal Center and Austin Pets Alive always need volunteers to walk dogs.

How long are you going to be gone?

I'm just going to say that a man (grown up) who has a job and fathered children should be able to amuse himself for a short period of time without a script.

Please tell me that you're not going to pre-cook all his meals and then freeze and label them with the meal type and date.

Geez. Tough crowd.

I'd take a look at a mini pack for the Round Rock Express, it's a pretty inexpensive way to pass an evening that doesn't require a ton of interaction if you're so inclined.

The first sentence of the original post states they will be gone one month.

Original poster I think it is time for your husband to figure out how to entertain himself.
He should also plan to join you and the children for a long weekend halfway through your trip.

I missed that.

Doesn't change my response.

Why?

There's got to be something outside that needs attention - redesign - rebuild - teardown - start...
Give him suggestions to one of those and have that be his project....
You should suggest that he go and do something he's wanted to do but never had the time being a dad and a husband... as long as there's not single dollar bills involved, he'll enjoy it, keep him occupied and you happy when you return....
