Yeah, never understood the cliche nature of surfers. You would think they'd be open to newcomers so their sport would become more popular, but as it is they are a closed society.

The thing is, motorcycles had become mainstream. The Waco incident sets things back 20 years. I bet Harley and the Japanese shops have seen a decline after that.

When everyone gets along, it's good for "bid'ness".

Unlike more evenly-regulated stick and ball sports, multiple factors and limitations come into play in the sport of surfing. Weather, season, surf conditions, and popularity of a particular spot. Not a year-round sport and swells get crowded. Locals learn to get along and subscribe to a course of etiquette that allows everyone 'fair play' as it were and more importantly - safety - out in the surf. When a bunch of occasional barneys drop in, accidents happen and people get hurt. That's no reason to be a stereotypical aggro punk, but it's why locals tend to shun newcomers.

This post is useless without a picture of Swayze and Reeves, dagnabbit.

It is a great movie. Part of me admires the devotion to the sport, there are very few people so absorbed with their sport as surfers are.

I saw a surfing documentary once called Step into Liquid I think. They showed people surfing the wakes of vessels in the Houston Ship Channel. Nothing big, but it looked like a person with good balance could ride one all day if they wanted to.
