We're thinking of buying an older house that needs updating. Where can I find the best selection of kitchens and bathrooms in Austin? Thanks.

And can anybody recommend a good contractor? The house also needs the horrible floor tiles ripped out and replaced with hardwood and the ceilings are all popcorn.

I think the main Morrison Supply Showroom on Springdale Road is fantastic. They have good prices and service as well.

Go to new communities and walk their model homes. Instead of seeing pieces of kitchens and bathrooms, you'll see the entire thing. Go to several builders. You'll see the similarities in what's hot in trends right now.

Hello there. I am using an interior designer for my kitchen remodel. Checking out their portfolios is the way to go. They will often times provide a better feel than a box store or contractor will. PM and I will tell you her name. We really liked her because she niches to the average consumer...not the uber high-end multi-million dollar homes you see in magazines.

Protip for you - if you can save the cabinets you will save a ton of $$$. Cabinets can eat up a 1/3 of your budget. Refinish if you can. Check the condition of the cabinets and make sure they are solid wood and not made of junk like particle board (go with ply-wood) and you have good panels like Oak (which you can paint if you hate the grain) vs. say thermofoil (You can't refinish thermofoil)

We are in the middle of our remodel: Here's the before and the current stage we are at:

We had a fantastic experience at the Tile Shop. You can find entire model kitchens and baths there and the prices and choices are great.

Thanks so much for all the posts! Morrison's was great and prices look reasonable.

We've already remodeled a kitchen and a bath (though not in Texas), so we have hard-earned kitchen expertise!

I'm amazed in Austin: people want premium prices for houses that are - basically - tear downs! Almost none of the houses we've seen have been remodeled. We wanted to get a (close in) house that was updated... but if that exists they want $1.5 million for it.

Thanks for the Tile Shop address. Gorgeous bathrooms and floor tiles. Not much in the way of kitchen stuff though. Anybody know the best place for kitchens (cabinets, etc.)? Morrison is great for kitchen fixtures but they didn't have many kitchen cabinets.

I'm not sure if you'll consider it a showroom per se, but we remodeled our kitchen with UB Kitchens. Their location off Burnet Rd does have a design center with "rooms" done in different cabinet styles. I am really pleased with the quality of the cabinets (try reading some of the posts on the Home forum regarding cabinets and your head will spin!). I had a fabulous experience with them as well from the design to the installation. We remodeled a 1976 kitchen and could not be happier with the results!
