So I currently live in Round Rock but my husband went to Bastrop and liked it. Our lease is up in July so he wants me to think about moving there. I'd like to buy a house and get some land. So for that it would be good. I'm just worried about the schools. The ratings online are really poor. But I don't want to judge it strictly on that. Ones anyone out there have kids in school there that could give me some advice. Thanks!

Bastrop is very much a family area with lots of kids. I know several families who choose to live in Bastrop and raise their kids there rather than do so in Austin.

Bastrop is a suburb of Austin. I travel through there often. It's pretty small, smaller than Round Rock, the suburb in which I live. Being smaller, it has a more country feel to the place (Buccees, Fried Chicken, Rednecks (If you will). I worked there over the summer and if you guys want solitude, Bastrop is the place for you.

Having lived in Bastrop for the past 2+ years with kids, I think it's a great place for families. Cost of living is still relatively low compared to other areas around Austin (although, that may change in the next 10 years), and there is a great community feel across all of the local schools and civic services. We always have something to keep the kids busy around here, and almost every business in town is kid friendly, especially the restaurants.

One piece of advice for anyone looking to buy land around here: do it fast. Prices are going up so fast I can hardly believe it.
