Yet another thread on this topic .

I am considering moving to Austin from SF Bay Area (South Bay). We are Asian Indians and have two kids 8 and 12. I am currently employed with large tech company. Primary reason to consider this move (subject to finding a suitable job) is relatively lower housing cost.

I would be great if I could get some suggestions on :

- Neighborhoods with good Indian population and nice elementary, middle and high schools.
- My daughter and wife has allergies managed by OTC medication. I heard Austin has bad reputation in this context. How bad is it?

Anything else, I should be considering.

Thanks!

Northwest Austin is where many of the tech companies are. There is also a growing Indian population there. I'd checkout 78727 and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Regarding allergies, they are pretty terrible here for much of the year, but most people can manage them with OTC meds.

Have you considered Dallas? Large Indian population here.

Northwest Austin and parts of Round Rock have a sizable Indian community and a lot of great Indian restaurants.

Make a shortlist of top rated High Schools where you might be interested in sending your kids, then look at their demographics. That'll give you a pretty good idea of which have the largest Indian communities.

It's anecdotal but most my Indian coworkers are in Avery Ranch/Cedar Park.

What is your budget? Housing costs are relative but Austin is the most expensive big city for housing costs in Texas. Dallas has 150k+ Asian Indians. Austin about 20k. Location of the said "good tech job" is key here. Where you work will decide where you need to look!! There are quite a few Indians in NW Austin (Dominion at Great Hills and surrounding communities($600k-$750k for older homes) and of course, Avery Ranch and Ranch at Brushy Creek($500k for new homes)). SW Austin(especially Circle C Ranch) has a growing Indian community but you'd be looking at jobs located south of the river. If you haven't already heard -- traffic is the biggest issue in Austin (unless you can telecommute).

I suffer from Cedar allergies and they are pretty brutal. A whole month of watery/itchy eyes, congestion and scratchy throat. But there is a bit of relief using a combination of prescriptions, OTC medications and nasal rinses.
