Pioneer village is a reconstucted village/farm in Austin. There is a Children"s Museum, although the better 2 are the Treehouse in San Antonio and the Childrens Museum in New Braunfels. The entire area is working on a trail system. We've even got one in the works here in Hutto that is supposed to go as far as North Austin (so the story goes). It is or was supposed to originate by Star Ranch. As for the vibe, much of the original vibe is being eaten away by growth.

I do think that Austin will have many of these things in the future. This is an interim period where Austin is relying on San Antonio for the larger venues it lacks, such as amusement parks and large outdoor/indoor arenas. That will very likely be no more in 3-5 years. You will hear people scream bloody murder about destroying the old Austin vibe, but it will happen. Larger retailers and chains will take over South Congress. DT will get more as well, and start transforming itself from a de facto college party strip to a mature cosmopolitan area for all ages and wallets. People will scream about that too, but the days of week-end barricading of 6th will be a thing of the past. What we are living in now is a transition stage between the old and the new.

Hi Lam515,

I'm also moving to Austin from NYC within the next two months... How is your home/apartment search going? If you are renting, is there any apartment complex you recommend? I will be interviewing moving companies next week, do you have any recommendations on that as well?
