College Town, what college!! There are more aggies here than tea sippers. We are a music, theatre, art, historical, hillside, Barton Springs, SXSW, hill country, city-life, country-life, small town life (completely surrounded by small towns with so much history and activity), Pecan Festival, kind of town. If you love it, you can find it here, in bulk.

A college town is like 20,000 people who mostly are affiliated with the college. 1.5 million people is rediculous to say its a college town.

doesn't matter how many people live in Austin. The culture is like that of any ole' "college town".

Austin used to be a college town, about, oh, 30-40 years ago. Now, it's got a bit of everything, it seems, as domino 1 said. Though I notice the food, and the weird, wasn't mentioned - got that, too!

I do get tired of seeing burnt orange everywhere and those silly, chrome long horn emblems on the back of everyone's cars (even those with license plates that read California, LOL). But I would not call Austin a college down.

Even if you live near Downtown, the college vibe is not that strong. Most students stick to the apartments and shopping centers near or in UT and rarely travel outside of that. I grew up in Houston and many of my high school friends attended UT. Most of them never ventured past the Mo Pac/Koenig/MLK slab of land. Now that I live here, a lot of them are shocked when I tell them of places like Mt. Bonnell or even Lake Travis.

UT really has become a city within a city.

The College "frat boy" mentality carries though out the city, though. Maybe it's just a Texas thing but I certainly don't remember people in Houston getting this drunk and rowdy. About 99.9% of the people I work with cannot bare to hit the sack before hitting the local watering hole first. *shrug* To each his own.

Austin is best known for UT, Dell, sixth street and music. The new amazing skyline clearly says it's more than a college town.

San Antonio has more college students than Austin but it has never been labeled a college town. Tourism is the ($10.5 billion)5th largest industry, behind, Biomedical-healthcare, Finance, manufacturing, government. Aerospace is almost a $4 billion dollar economy for the city, most outsiders don't know this. Sadly many label it as a tourist only driven city.

No matter how dynamic and diverse both cites become, they will always be remembered for what they are both best known for. I doubt it will ever change.
