austin is inexpensive in comparison to New York City, not upstate NY. blame that on the influx of people.

If you're going to work at the airport and you're not into Sixth Street, then consider finding a place in Bastrop, Manor, Elgin, etc. Or, if you like the country, you may be able to find a rural rental. But the social scene may not be up to your standards.

I live in a two-bedroom apartment in a very nice neighborhood in downtown Austin. It's $1,089/month and it's near 38th and Lamar. I am moving out at the end of June.

But if I worked at the airport and made only $14.00/hour I would probably look in Dove Springs (78744).

Good luck.

True. But I've heard 183/N. Lamar referred to as central Austin.

I called it downtown Austin to emphasize "central." As in extremely central.

It doesn't matter now anyway, as y'all have probably successfully scared the OP away.

$1,089 on a 2BR seems like a steal for 38th and Lamar.

No they haven't . I don't believe anything they say really . The ones with actual insight and were helpful I appreciate but those that just attacked me and made fun of my financial situation I don't pay any mind to . I'll be visiting and finding a realtor to show me around .

And Glenn Ross : it's not that I'm not into sixth street if i was financially capable I would live downtown , Im not much into country but if I have to live out a ways to afford the city I would .

If you feel people's comments were an attack I'd say you need a thicker skin. You're asking for advice from random strangers on an anonymous internet board, with that in mind I think it has been very civil.

We get at least 2 or 3 threads a week on here from people who want to move to Austin but can't really say why. A lot of the commenters here are just trying to give you realistic expectations to counter balance some of the glowing Austin press that is out there. Isn't that what you want? Advice from people who actually live here? Or do you just want affirmation and a co-signing of your plan?
