My 21 yr old child moved to Austin from Portland, OR last Fall. She moved for the music scene. Austin is known to us as "Little Portland"..cool people, vegetarians, tiny houses, music. It IS cheaper than Portland, she lived in city center apt in OR & now lives in S Austin apt. She has said she will be moving back to Portland next year. Austin is great. People are nice & friendly BUT even with sunnier weather than Portland, there's not much to do. She says hikes are not really hikes. Too far from ocean, beaches. A beautiful city but..no mountains, fresh farm veggies, water sports, major sport teams. (We also lived in Seattle for many years so Mariners, Seahawks, Trailblazers RIP Sonics). I guess I see what initial poster was saying. A great job opportunity also needs a balance of recreational activities to earn & pay for the higher cost of living. My other daughter loves Pflugerville & doesn't want to move back to Northwest BUT she has small kids. She bought when prices were lower & loves her school district. I doubt she could afford to move there now. I also wonder if her kids will want to stay as young adults. Her only complaint? TRAFFIC. Omg..all they talk about! At least in Portland you can look at beautiful mountains while you're sitting in your car 

It always makes me laugh when people move somewhere, then complain that they can't do the same things they used to do in the place they left.

She is right we don't really have a natural outdoor attraction. Mountains and forests are beautiful things we don't have. our big draw was affordability. but I would say in about five years that will be completely gone too.

you could say not bad for me, because I have a house. my career is established. but for the young. hmmm..
