The big boys in Austin : BoA, Chase, Wells Fargo, Wachovia
Mid to small size ones : IBC, Compass, Franklin, Indymac, Prosperity, Regions..etc to name a few.
And then there are Credit Unions. ( I have an account with Amplifi Credit Union as well...i don't do much with them though).
I would like to talk to some bankers to see what I can afford in terms of a mortgage while I'm down in May. Does BOA stand for Bank of Austin? Does anyone have it's web site? I Googled Bank of Austin, but every bank who contained those words came up and I don't know which was the one mentioned above.

BOA is for Bank of America. May I suggest Guaranty Bank?

Yes I still have Comerica accounts, but they are not in areas I go so I don't use them. Frost Bank has been very good to me!

Just a quick update: We ended up going with Wachovia and loathe them! They are the worst. We are switching back to a credit union. You cannot beat the special attention you get and flexibility.

I'm a credit union fan myself. Last commercial bank I banked with was Wells Fargo , this was in 1998 and they were a nightmare. Never again.

Default Capitol Credit Union

Capitol Credit Union has 3 locations and they're part of the Austin credit union exchange--you can go to any credit union for service.

I think their customer service is great, they're very attentive, and the tellers remember me and greet me by name when I walk in--and I'm no moneybags, believe me!

The folks at their downtown location on Lavaca and 17th are great.

I second or third or fourth UFCU...excellent service, excellent rates, don't try to ********* at every turn like the big boys. You have to "qualify" for UFCU, but that can be as simple as having a membership at Wheatville Coop (a food store). UFCU is up there with USAA regarding services, rates, and being a quality institution.

I personally would stay away from BoA, WellsFargo and the like as the rules are so tight for trying to keep a free checking account, it's almost impossible to remember how many withdrawals, phone calls, visits in person you've made to the bank...all of which you have to remember if you don't want to be charged. Yes, there's an ATM on every corner with the big boys, but I haven't found fewer ATMs with smaller banks and credit unions to be a problem since most everything is done with credit cards, debit cards, and electronic banking. I hardly get cash, and when I do, it's not like I have to drive 10 miles to go get it.
