Yes, I think that you would have to call San Marcos a college town!

The other responders are absolutely right, the reputation of the individual program (particularly in something like music) is more important than the overall reputation of the school. Look at the size of the classes too and whether or not there are specific faculty members that teach the courses that you are interested in.

I am a TX State alum (although it was still Southwest Texas State then). I loved it. Like any big school, there are going to be a lot of parties. But that is true for UT as well. In fact, I believe UT made it to #1 on the list of top party schools. So, not much difference there.

And I think the blonds with spray tans who say "like" a lot used to be true, but not so much any more. Back in the day, it used to be a bunch of people who couldn't get into UT. But now that pretty much no one who is not top 10% can get into UT, you have some very smart folks going to TX State.

And, honestly, unless you go to Yale or Harvard or one of the other big Ivy Leagues, no one even notices where you graduated from.

Just wanted to add that, yes, San Marcos is a college town, but I loved it. Very pretty and lots to do.
