I'm currently a lifeguard, but I'm already thinking about what's next. I want my next job to be something that's looks good on a resume, if I was applying for a job in the medical or scientific field. I don't have a high school diploma yet.

Agreed, first get a HS diploma. How are your grades? I'm not sure how many great jobs there are out there in those fields without a college degree...

i'd suggest a job dealing with customers in a retail setting. This will provide you with customer service experience, marketing, inventory control, salesmanship, and more.

Also, see if you can fit in some volunteer experience. An easy one is to donate blood every 56 days. More importantly, volunteering can teach you leadership skills, open up career possibilities, and help you to build a network of people who could open doors for you down the road.

In addition to what Eastcoasting has stated, I'd also add:
  • Look at certifications in Business-Continuity and Emergency Management/Response, too. State certifications for florists, nursing aides, early-childhood teachers ... These could give you a "leg-up" on getting interviewed for a position in which you might be interested.
  • There are many, many areas of business where you can attend classes, take an exam, and get a certification for that line of business.
  • I believe there are quite a few organizations/businesses that will want a college degree plus certification, but if you have an interest in any of those fields, do your due diligence and check them out.
