According to the Texas DPS, there were nearly 44,000 criminal convictions in 2015, of which 108 were attributable to LTC holders.

It's safe to say they're a pretty darned good bunch.

I just don't see why handguns have any place in a peaceful society. All they do is add a layer of distrust that doesn't need to exist. What exactly are you afraid of?

Your fantastic 'peaceful society' includes my having a gun pointed at me from 6 feet away. It was at that time I decided to legally pursue my right to be armed...by taking the instruction, training and testing required to obtain a license. My layer of distrust was well-earned, IMO.

Of course, no responsible gun owner did this (so far as we know) but that still leaves a LOT of irresponsible gun owners out there; maybe more of them than of the former. People who insist on their right to carry a gun for no real purpose need to realize that lots of others will be doing it too, and the advocates "own" part of that problem.
Pretty sure the perp in this case cares not one whit about the legality of carrying a firearm.

When someone has "the drop" on you from six feet away, how is carrying a gun going to help you (Do anything but get shot)?

The real issue is, though, that your "right" to buy a gun (or, more likely, multiple guns) and carry it around provides a steady supply of guns to future law breakers as well as your fellow licensed gun carriers. And that surfeit of guns infringes on my right to live in a peaceful society.

I carry a gun to be prepared just like I carry a hanky, have smoke detectors in my house, insurance, use sunscreen, take an asprin a day, etc.

So count me in with all those hundreds of millions of terribly paranoid American people.

Sorry, but you are living in a fantasy world, trying to blame a legal, inanimate tool.

None of the crazy predictions made by you naysayers came true after the CHL law was signed by Bush, and I have yet to see anyone open carrying in Central Texas since that law went into effect.

Guns aren't ever going away, no matter how much you wish it so.

Not true. Put up a No Guns sign and all will be well.

Prepared for what? Be specific.

Just curious, if you had had a gun on you at that time, would it have helped anything? Something tells me that a mugger who's desperate enough to do that over the cash in your pocket isn't going to wait for you to pull out your gun. If anything, it raises the likelihood of you getting shot. I don't live a fantasy world, just a pragmatic one. Angry, scared people who need the option to kill someone at anytime (because a sentence written with inconsistent commas 200 years ago is open to interpretation) are the reason for the proliferation of guns among both responsible and irresponsible owners.
