You've probably never been to the Bywater area of New Orleans. It's basically a "Brooklyn South" with hipsters from Brooklyn that couldn't afford it there anymore taking over, with their chic $7 lattes and "gourmet hotdogs" (DatDog anyone?) that run for $12 (with vegan hotdogs and buns mind you and always organic catsup with sugar from non-violent countries).

On the positive side, they have renovated early 19th century shotguns into colorful interpretations of years gone by, but on the negative side they rent all their places out to AirBnB instead of workers that actually need a place to stay. In the old days, service workers could have a relatively nice house in Bywater and take the Riverfront Streetcar to their work along Canal or Poydras. Those days are over though.

See East Austin for a comparison. The only difference is the hipsters here are taking circa 1950 shacks and renovating them. There's just not as much raw material to work with here.

It's on the menu, but I've never tried it - we get the shrimp & catfish appetizers. They have a smaller patio, an inside bar and a piano bar, reminiscent of the original. Not the same of course.

But Longhorn football has been sucking... wind for several years. Got a new coach this season. Hope he can get them back to their winning ways and fill all 101,000 seats in Memorial Stadium again.

Seems they have three franchises in the US: New Orleans, Orlando, and San Antonio.

Contrary to popular belief, the best hurricanes are not at Pat O'briens. They use a mix and then add rum and ice.

The real hurricane is a mixture of 3 kinds of rum, vodka, gin, triple sec, grenadine with pineapple & orange juice.

The best hurricanes are at Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar. The secret is so guarded that it's reputed that Jean Lafitte told his bartenders that if word ever got out about the recipe, those folks would be brought "to the bayou" to "walk the plank" into alligator infested waters.
All I said was "closest good Hurricane", not the best.

We missed Lafitte's the last two times we were visiting in NO in 1985 & 1991, and I was a bit young when living there in 1946. Was too young to dine with my parents at Antoine's also.
We've got some Pusser's Rum (from Tortola, BVI) in a ship's decanter that might be a good start to mixing up a homemade Hurricane.

If you want some good rum drinks and lots of different varieties, try Isla downtown. I don't know if he's the owner or the manager, but the older man who is always there really knows his rum!

Thanks! I like the drinks at Peche' but I don't like the prices!

It seems that places here believe that if you mix "classic" drinks you must charge over-inflated prices.

That's why Happy Hours at most all the restaurants only have discounts on the selected well drinks, wines, & brews.

Years ago while dining at The Range Steakhouse in Las Vegas, I ordered a Gran Marnier for after my $32 bone-in filet (very expensive for the time) dinner.
After the waiter brought me the check, I was startled to see the GM was $35 (the bartender poured the 100 year stuff). My fault for not specifically telling him the "regular". Of course his tip was not as generous as it would've been.
