You know I actually thought of this but it is a very popular and well know spot. You are right, probably very crowded but still good if no other place to go.

In all likelihood, you would be better off NOT going to a 'good' spot - it would turn into the Hunger Games of sorts, most likely .

But all that survival gear is good for the economy....

Besides, if you know about it you can be sure a zillion others also know about it. That makes it not so good a place to go.

Survival gear sold like hotcakes for Y2K too. Remember that?

Know a guy that buried a new concrete septic tank (maybe two?) in the ground and set it up as an emergency bunker with solar, batteries, a generator, and a 'burst' short-wave radio. Never actually saw it, but he had it set up pretty good, as I understand it. He said it could double as a tornado shelter in an emergency.

He also 'smoothed' the dirt on his unpaved entrance to his property so he could check if anyone was driving out onto his place while he was gone.

Its not just a nuclear event but any event that would require living outside of what we have comfortably come to know (grocery store down the street/not growing own food, electricity to keep us cool and warm, not having to deal with people trying to raid you and your stuff. Things like that).

Some other scenarios are like these:

1. EMP blast
2. Financial sector collapse
3. Widespread attack and destruction of power sources on our power grid

etc.

Its not so much of a worry as it is just being reasonably prepared. I don't think these things are inevitable but I would rather be reasonably prepared for my family (if it was just me it wouldn't matter as much). Its my responsibility to love and protect them. Being reasonably prepared for situations is a loving and protecting thing to do. One can not simply turn on the news today and not be concerned to some degree about the World state of affairs (or the state of affairs and the division in this own country). Nations all scrambling to develop and attain nuclear weapons. Some even resorting to developing chemical and biological agents of warfare. Nations hating other nations simply because of religious difference or difference in freedoms (what some allow in media vs. what other countries censor etc.). It's like so many countries hate America. At the very least, its like so many countries are hellbent on each others destruction just simply because of minor (or major) differences.

Never before in the Worlds history have so many nations had access to the red button (or have been aggressively trying to get it) and has hostilities between nations been to such a boiling point when these very destructive things are within arms reach. Commanders (to a lesser degree) have to prepare a battle plan, get the troops ready and send them off. In the past it required huge commitment and much more thought. Now, it could just be instant and reactionary. Many now simply have to just push a button (to a degree) or give the word to unleash something whether it be biological, chemical, electronic or mechanical. It is so much easier now to retaliate or do preemptive strike if you make the wrong person mad.

Thanks for your suggestions Austin Nerd. What is SHTF and WROL?
the acronyms are SH*T hit the fan, without rule of law

survivalistboards.com is a very active forum that has topics that range from crazy survivalist paranoid conspiracy theories to more mundane topics like farming and homesteading.

In austin some of the events that I would worry about would be

1) losing a job/medical emergency - make sure you have 6 months+ of emergency cash
2) someone breaking into your house - fortify the entrances to your home with things like 3 inch screws, long metal door plates etc, have an alarm system, a dog, and cameras.
3) flash flood - dont live in an area that floods
4) forest fire - keep your yard clear to the closest greenbelt

Austin is fortunate in that we live in a nexus where there are pretty much no widescale natural disasters. One of the only locations in the country. We are also far enough from the major volcanoes (like under yellowstone) to be out of the direct impact. Out of the way of hurricanes to the south, and major fault lines to the east and west.

The northern clear zone is actually close to the yellowstone volcano zone

Probably the most likely paranoid event would be failure of the electrical system due to hacking. In theory one or two nukes airburst in the upper atmosphere would take out electricity for a year or more.

If SHTF the best thing to have is skills and knowledge (can you cook, grow vegetables, identify potable water, start a fire, make a tourniquet, stitch a wound, identify an infection? Can you fix an engine, sew, sharpen a knife, butcher an animal, know another language?) and then a strong community, relationships are better than ammno, better than whiskey, better than seeds.

Work on your skills and meet your neighbors!

Yea im more worry about getting the flu than N. Korea getting a rocket off the island. I hope it never comes to this, but we are in that period of were history repeats it self. Honestly, I think we as a nation are in need of some revamping the system. What worked 200+ years ago, doesnt mean it will work 2k years from now. War is never a good thing as nobody really wins, but we got to do something with our nation soon. Im no politician and hate politics but were over due for a "invasion" attempts.

If the event were nuclear in nature, any fallout could make its way into the water, killing everyone in the cavern slowly and painfully.
