When I took the MSF Foundation course in NY several years ago my recollection is that only California and I think one other state allowed lane splitting, but that it went on all over the place and you'd rarely get ticketed for it -- but that you shouldn't do it anyway not for fear of being ticketed, but because drivers in most states aren't accustomed to it and can react unpredictably.

When riding on a motorcycle......it is usually best to assume everybody else on the road either can not see you at all or are actively trying to kill you and be prepared accordingly. My philosophy on two wheels is based on the wise words of Lord Frith:

“All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you,

It has kept me alive so far. If you ride a bike like you drive a car, then you are on borrowed time. Always be ready to dodge.

digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.”

Exactly! You an run stop signs too, and if there are no police around to ticket you, you can get away with it. Otherwise you could be ticketed.

This is an active site covering general motorcycling across Texas. There are several Austin area riders on the site.

You cannot lane split in Texas which is a shame... here in CA it's legal and I think it's really necessary for motorcycle safety in stop and go traffic so that you don't end up getting rear-ended. In addition, stop and go is not really designed for bikes as they don't have the kind of cooling system capacity that cars do. I don't understand why TX does not consider legalizing it when California officially has. The CHP and other organizations (UCSB) have done studies that show that lane splitting increases motorcycle safety which is counter to the perception that it's dangerous, when done right it's not.

It's been attempted several times, and has been again this year.

I'd offer lane-splitting if the riders would comply with noise ordinances.

Not much chance of that, I reckon.

The Texas legislature could care less what California has legalized. In fact that probably works against attempts to do so in Texas.
