I've been called "hon" and "girl" here by people who aren't family or friends and I don't take offense to either.

I am a woman, and I agree with Lokemoki here that being called "honey" or "sweetheart" is situational. Most of the time, I would consider it sexist, yes, but we are also in Texas and in the South, and sometimes people using those words are just genuinely nice, Southern people who call everyone that. I have encountered this same thing in medical offices (various doctors, nurses, etc.) and sometimes even randomly at stores.

Hello,

I like your posts and think I can relate. I have been in the Portland, OR most of my life. I am 27 and my girlfriend and I are planning on living in Austin,TX this August. We visited last summer to confirm our prior thoughts on the city and what it has to offer. Ive been told that Austin is similar to Portland, I haven't spent enough time in the city to really compare to Portland. From what I can tell anywhere in Texas cannot compare to the liberalism of Portland/SF/Berkley etc.. Ive spent time in all these places and it is time to leave. I also looked at the Scottsdale,AZ area but have ruled it out simply to the fact that its mostly old people retiring and not too much going on. I totally understand wanting to leave California, I would like to live in San Jose/San Diego but cannot afford it. While people in Austin will tell you it has become expensive they are right and this is something to consider. Although, moving a bit outside a major city in Texas cannot compare to a 9%+ income tax in Oregon and California among the extra taxes over and over again. The food is cheaper, buses are cheaper, not as sufficient tho. If you are in CA then you are used to being able to do stuff outside alot of the year. In Oregon this is just not the case unless you have time and money to be snowboarding etc.. It rains here for 9 months and is almost as expensive as Seattle at this point. If that's a fair comparison for someone that's spent time in Seattle vs. where they are from. I think your going to like it and will be able to purchase a home for half of what you can anywhere on the West Coast near a major city. I understand not liking the extreme liberalism that we have here on the West, I think that you will find some of that in Austin. As a whole the state of Texas will be conservative and you should be able to find a middle ground as long as you don't mind a mix of Sanders/Clinton or some Trump supporters I'm guessing as you head an hour in any direction outside Austin.

You are right.Midland/Odessa would be good for people wearing Trump hats not Austin.

Moving from CA to Austin? Ever hear the expression; "from the frying pan, into the fire"?

Austin is referred to as: ",,,{t}he Liberal cesspool in the garden of Texas" Pretty well describes it!

The Peoples Republic of Austin, has since the mid 1960's, fancied itself to be the San Francisco/Berkeley/Boston of Texas.
As with any city whose major industries are large universities and state capitols, one must expect a preponderance of
Socialist/Communist thinking on the part of it's residents. Austin is pi$$ed that Seattle has the statue of Lenin, and it doesn't!

As with any city whose major industries are large universities and state capitols, Maybe 30 years ago, but Tech and other industries are bigger players now.

.....one must expect a preponderance of Socialist/Communist thinking on the part of it's residents. A very small part.
