I had my degree back then, but it didn't affect pay. Yeah, most of the schools had a permanent sub and they just called in flunkies like me when he/she was already booked. It is kind of funny, at one school there was a French teacher who was going to be gone and she wanted the permanent sub to take her class. There was another class that also needed a sub, and I got called in for that one. Well, turns out Ms French teacher kept her class freezing (there was a 'window unit' installed above the door in addition to the central AC) and the permanent sub didn't want to be stuck in there all day. So not long after I got to my assignment, he showed up and swapped classes on me. Froze my tush off all day. I should have gotten hazard pay! .

Wow, I may have to check into subbing!

I just read an article in the Hill Country News about Leander High School. The IB program is growing so fast that LISD is looking for teachers with an IB certification. If you like working with highly motivated, challenging kids, this might be a good path.

I teach in Austin ISD and you can teach summer school. It might be too late, though, to apply. Check out Austin Independent School District : Human Resources

I'm at a Title I school and we're using those funds to pay teachers for after school and Saturday tutoring.

Good luck. Whatever you earn will never be quite enough. If I wasn't single with no kids, I don't know how I would keep my head above water!

Default to AustinAlice

I have a question about Austin ISD jobs? On their web site there are 7-8 English jobs posted for next school year. I am moving from FL where I have my Professional Cert in English 6-12, 3 years of experience, and great references. How hard is it really to get your foot in the door? I would rather teach HS, but I am willing to teach MS if I have to. Any insights would be helpful. Thanks!

The requirements for subbing have increased a LOT
I don't think so. Basically, you just fill out an app and pass a background check. You don't need a degree, nor any qualifications other than breathing.
