We are arriving in Austin tomorrow to re-do the trip we postponed due to the Hurricane. We have the cities we plan to look at narrowed down to Round Rock, Leander, Cedar Park, and Pflugerville. We will also be visiting downtown Austin to see the city (this is a get to know the area and get ideas for cities to rent trip).

For those that live in these areas...

-Is there anything in particular we should be looking for?

-Specific zip codes?

-What GPS system do you use in your car? I currently use Waze but have found it's not the greatest outside of the Bay Area.

Waze is great here. I use it daily.

Thanks. I have good luck with it in the Bay Area but found the time estimates to be terrible in the suburbs when I was in Las Vegas.

A good search of the forum using those cities as the search title would come up with 1000s of threads.

I'd be looking at apartments, seriously. Let us know how your trip goes.

Did you already say somewhere what your budget was and where you would be working?

All four of those cities are great places to live. I used to live in north Pflugerville for ten years, and I've been in round rock for almost three years. Great experiences with both cities. Definitely family friendly if you have kids. Lots of shopping options and family oriented activities.

We've been in a house for the last 30 years so not sure how I'd feel about an apartment. From what I could see, a 2 bdrm apt didn't seem all that much cheaper than renting a house. Do you think I'm wrong on that one? Would love to hear your thoughts. Assuming we like your lovely city (looked nice coming down...on the Tarmac as I type this), we plan on renting for a year and then buying. The rents I was seeing online for a 2 bdrm home were in the $1500-1700 range, which is fine by us. Our 29 year old son will be joining us.

I was referring to renting in general to start, so home or apartment that's a good decision. They are building nice apartments all over the place, so might want to consider the amenities that come with one.

Years ago we rented at AMLI South Shore and really liked it. Perhaps check out the website/location.

We are in a 2700 sq ft duplex (spanish style) in nw hills and it only costs 2400/month. It backs up to a green space with no visible neighbors behind us.

There are a bunch for rent in this area and they are all quite nice.

I wouldnt rule out living close in either.
