As you can probably tell I'm not terribly shy. I usually don't have problems making friends. I have however lived in other places where trying to strike up a conversation with a neighbor netted me a blank bored look. It puts you off of trying if people are receptive to your overtures, ya know?

I suspected that most places in Austin would be friendly -- it's just that kind of a place. When I was cruising around the NW it seemed a bit isolated -- that people were doing their own thing independently. It's hard to get a feel in such a short time frame though and I could be completely off base.

We're moving to Austin to slow down the rat race, enjoy our kid and dog... and ourselves. Once we pick a house, we're setting down roots and hoping to stay put until the kid graduates... she's 18 months old right now.

As others have said, be friendly and you'll have friends. I used to (well, still do, but our across the road neighbor is half a mile away if you count both driveways) make turkey and andouille gumbo out of leftover turkey the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year when we lived in Barton Hills, and leave the doors and windows open if weather allowed (it usually did), and neighbors would appear at the door with hopeful looks on their faces, dragged in by the aroma (yes, we shared - I made a LOT of gumbo!). Halloween, we'd set up a cauldron of apple cider over the outdoor firepit after decorating to the hilt and pass out candy to the kids and cider to the parents. There was certainly no lack of kids then!

TexasHorseLady, THAT is exactly what I'm talking about... I'm all about hanging out eating some good food and enjoying some adult beverages with neighbors!

AGA - I live in Sendera too. Though my husband and I are fairly new to the neighborhood, neighbors have been extremely welcoming. I'm a bit shy and quiet, but I am always up for some good food and drinks with folks.

Now hopefully the weather will stay decent so there can be some more driveway parties.
