Anyone over 65 in Travis county (lago vista) that knows the actual tax exemption % rates or dollar deduction you get for an over 65 exemption?

Before you tell me to do this — I’ve called the appraisal district who referred me to the tax office. They said they didn’t know the exact amounts and couldn’t provide that by phone.

Looking at several areas for retirement so tax rates important to us. Travis county — almost as if it is handed out on a case by case basis and said they can’t tell me anything by phone. Just said every year is different and taxes increase about 10% a year and some years entities may give 0
Over 65 exemptions with the exception of school Taxes which are frozen after a year.

If you are over 65 in Travis county — can you share what the standard over 65 exemption is? Would greatly appreciate your input.

It isn't easy to retire in Austin, property tax is a killer.

Looks like it could vary by taxing entity...
From TravisCountyTx.gov...

Exemption Amounts

Exemption amounts are determined by each taxing entity. For more information about the exemptions for your property, select the Property Tax Estimator in Property Tax Basics.

How does the exemption work for a jointly owned home where only one owner has reached 65?

I’m curently in Harris county (and investigating moving to Travis county) but if at least one of the homeowners (who currently live in the home) is over 65, you get the additional exemption.

I called to request the application for the age 65 exemption. I was sent an Application for Residence Homestead Exemption. I already have the Homestead Exemption. Does anyone know if I fill out this form again asking for both the General Residence Homestead Exemption and the Age 65 exemption? Or do I fill out the form only asking for the Age 65 exemption since I already have the homestead exemption?

That has been the case for both Travis and Williamson, according to my reading. Only one needed and it applies for the entire calendar year in which the owner turns 65, provided an application is submitted.

Next year for me...don't know if I should brag or complain!!!

Your home is qualified for 65 exemption if one of your reaches 65.

When we left Austin a year ago, we had over 65 neighbors on either side of us. I was curious so checked to see what their most recent tax amount was. One is paying $350 for AISD school taxes and the other zero. It is a mystery to me how that can be but high property tax was the only reason we left to retire as ours was well over $5000.

The house we left 'behind' when we downsized is a solid $12k in taxes now

Cut ours to $5k; but it has increased each year by roughly 10%. Dang
