I got a new job downtown and was wondering how bad traffic is going from near Slaughter & Manchaca heading downtown to Mopac & 5th... I need to be there around 7:30ish M-F .... anyone know how bad? best route??

Thanks

It won't be too bad if you're leaving at 7AM. I'm not sure what Brodie/Slaughter is like at 7AM, but if it's not too backed up getting through there, your best shot is probably Slaughter to Mopac and straight north.

I'd also experiment with Manchaca to William Cannon, west to Mopac and north from there. Or even Manchaca straight up to Lamar and on into downtown if you like surface street driving. You could also try Manchaca to Ben White, then west to Mopac and north.

Brodie/William Cannon is not too bad at 7. That's when it is just starting. You usually don't have to sit through the B/WC intersection more than 1-2 cycles. If it's really bad, I continue on Brodie to 290 and you can either hop on Mopac from there or cut over to Lamar up to 5th.

The back up is always South of 5th...and if early enough, you can beat it but if not Lamar is not a bad drive...At least it moves!

When I worked at Lamar & Barton Springs, at 7am I would just take Mopac. But if I left five minutes later, I would take Westgate to Lamar. Then I would take the back street, Kinney Ave. to Barton Springs. Turn back onto Lamar, there is very little traffic turning north because everyone on Mopac just keeps going until they hit their exit.

Just be really careful going down Kinney Ave., it is a neighborhood with school kids out at that time. They have speed bumps, but you have to drive really slow. It is still faster than Lamar, which is bumper to bumper and can take 20 minutes from Kinney to Barton Springs. Compared to less than five minutes on Kinney.

You could always take Congress as a back up, but I have to agree mopac is the best way. Bowie shouldn't be getting much traffic yet since the high school doesn't start til closer to 9 am~
