Hi all! I hope you can help me choose our next home. I really need some advice from locals to help me do this!

We are an English/South African family who have been traveling from state to state in search of our ideal home. Our children are home schooled but the eldest who is in 11th grade would like to go back to school. My husband is a foreign attorney who still needs to write a bar here in the US. He can work as a paralegal and as soon as we settle he will be looking for work.

We are looking for a safe neighborhood. Not too big and a place that is family orientated. Not too expensive either.

We have narrowed down our choices to either Austin or San Antonio. Please do not judge me too harshly but I am dead scared of Tornadoes!

I look forward to hearing from you.

You want to buy or rent? Price range? Money goes farther in San Antonio.

tornadoes are rare and even when they do hit they impact a really tiny area. Id worry more about my house catching on fire (which is also rare, but not as rare as a tornado).

As far as north or south, it depends on budget and where the job is. Austin is a bad town for paralegals. My wife was making 60K in california and could top out at 90K, while in austin she would be lucky to make 30K.

Agreed. Austin is close enough that you can make day trips up here at any time with just a bit of traffic.

Property crime is an American way. It is what it is. Be safe. Lock your car, put it in the garage. Know your neighbors. Be aware. You'll wake up with a car. There's property crime in Austin too.
