Latest crime statistics for Austin, 2016

I thought it might be interesting to post an update of the latest crime statistics available from the Austin Police Department (APD), which are from 2016. http://www.austintexas.gov/department/crime-information

The last time I did this was for 2012 to 2014 crime data, so I will be comparing the 2016 data to that previous compilation. That previous 2012 to 2014 comparison is available here. //www.city-data.com/forum/austi...l#post43253345

[b]Comparing 2014 and 2016:

Murder increased* from 33 to 37

Burglaries decreased from 5671 to 5164
Thefts decreased from 29827 to 26446
Motor V-Theft increased* from 2443 to 2473
Arson decreased from 84 to 80
TOTAL INDEXED CRIMES DECREASED FROM 41,423 TO 37,791

*While the total number of crimes increased in some categories as listed above, they were all still LESS than the number of crimes tallied in 2012!

The eight highest crime areas for total Indexed crimes are:
ZIP....INDEXED CRIMES
78741...3,380 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78753...3,187 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
78704...2,584 - S. Central Austin, Town Lake - BenWhite & Mopac/Loop 1 to IH-35
78758...2,563 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane

NOTE: the TOTAL number of crimes decreased in all of the zip codes listed above.

Highest crime areas for Aggravated Assaults are:
78741...231 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78753...229 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)

Highest crime areas for Robbery are:
78741...147 - E. Riverside Drive and Montopolis
78758...115 - Mopac to Lamar & 183 to Parmer Lane
78753...114 - North IH-35 corridor from 183 to Howard Lane (Rundberg Lane area)
78702.....84 - East Austin from MKL Blvd down to Town Lake and from IH-35 to Airport Blvd.

I think this is worth repeating again here that... while the total number of crimes increased since 2014 in some categories listed above, they were all still fewer than the number of crimes tallied in 2012! This is in spite of the population increases that I expect we have seen in every zip code.

I think this is especially interesting because it is my impression that most people believe that the crime rate is increasing. I surmise that this is because news about crime is so much more readily available these days than it used to be. This results in our hearing about crime more often and leads us to conclude that more crime is taking place, while that may not actually be the case.

One must also look into the methodology of the reporting - many departments intentionally under-report crime by playing with their reporting. For example - if a department doesn't respond to a theft call because the amount is under $100, then a few years later they up that to say, $500 - there might be a statistical decrease even though the thefts in the $100-500 range triple.

The devil's in the details.....

I do agree about the perceived versus actual in relation to how people view changes in crime rate. A few high profile cases, e.g. yogurt shop, rock thrower, can cause hysteria out of line with long term trends.

Glad to see that my zip code, 78702, has seen a 46% reduction in crime from 2006 to 2016. I'm getting tired of city council members and activists complaining about the demographic changes in East Austin, while ignoring the single greatest contributor to quality of life - not getting assaulted, murdered, robbed, etc. - being improved dramatically.
