Yeah a lot of the people I've met here from LA have very modest backgrounds but cashed out their extremely high real estate there and are living like kings here. You find a lot of them in Steiner Ranch where the lake lifestyle suits their LA mores.

My acquaintances from Miami, though, would never have been considered part of the middle-class, much less the lower middle-class. Lots of money from commercial real estate and property management in the Miami area going back decades. They got the place here so they could spend time near the grand kids.

The tech workers I know are all PhD types and probably make somewhere around $120k or $130k per year before bonuses. The one I know background for is from the mid-west and is the first generation of her family to go to college, pretty much.

With all of the condo towers going up in Austin is it following in Miami's footsteps?

Maybe sort of a weird Miami/Houston/NYC/LA hybrid? I’ve been jokingly calling it the 4th coast for a couple of years.

Well if you compare Austin to Miami:

500+ - Completed
Austin 4
Miami 43

500+ - Under construction
Austin 1
Miami 12

Austin's skyline growth is VERY impressive but it is not on the same level of Miami.

I'm not saying that Austin's highrise construction is on par with Miami's because I know that it's not but it seems like Austin is moving in the same direction as far as the type of highrise construction, in this case highrise residential.

Austin's skyline looks so good every time I see it. It's modern, beautiful and looks pretty large. A complete come up

I'm a recently retired guy in Houston and have checked out a number of the high-rise condos in downtown Austin over recent years. My impression (just through anecdotes from realtors) is that the 1-bedroom units in the new buildings tilt toward younger tech workers and the larger units toward retired people from out of town (like Houston). In Houston, many high-rise condos get sold to people from Mexico and other places that want a pied-a-terre here. Not so much in Austin, but that may change.
