This is why I live here. Females can wear skimpy fairy/mermaid/sexy maid costumes and not be the least bit cold at Halloween. You can smoke a turkey at Thanksgiving in jeans and a t-shirt and sit out on your deck Christmas eve with a red wine and enjoy the moonlight without freezing to death. Popping firecrackers at New Year's is usually chilly but not freezing. Also, you get a good chance of sitting dining outside on Valentine's Day. Spring Break is so spectacular you don't need to travel anywhere and SxSW is here anyway. Late March/April brings wonderful bluebonnets. Easter service can be held outside, the weather is always nice at Easter. May brings the return of bikinis and swimming weather.

I know everyone's mileage may vary, but what is considered a "long" commute in the Austin area? over 45 min?

yeah about 45 mins is long for most folks. To me longer than about 30 mins is long.

My commute is about 7 mins and I can go downtown in about 15. Price range of houses in my area (Nw hills) are around 275/sq ft. Sizes range from 1800 sq ft to 7000, with the bulk around 3500 sq ft.

I was just poking around Zillow and checking out the NW Hills area. Seems like I could find a decent house in my price range. How does Austin ISD compare with the rest of the ISDs in the area (vs. Eanes, Lake Travis, Leander, etc.)?

Anderson HS is a great option! (as in McCallum HS). Anderson is more economically uniform but nothing to the degree you will get in Eanes. IB options, manufacturing engineering program, great theater and choir program too. Strong athletes too. And AISD give you LASA as an option if you have a super high achiever.

My kids went private K-8th before switching to AISD for high school, couldn't be happier with our decision.

as mentioned the school district is 100% irrelevant. You need to look at the specific school track

AISD has some absolutely terrible schools and LASA (magnet) which is one of the best high schools in texas.

nw hills feeds mainly into doss/hill elem but has some highland park. Doss and Hill are excellent, highland park isnt quite as good.

murchison middle school - just ok
anderson high - prob the best regular hs in AISD.

However anderson is ranked around 200 in texas vs westlake (eanes) at 35 and westwood at 38 (rrisd) and vandegrift at 80ish (leander)

Part of the reason is that anderson has a diverse economic profile as I posted above.

also instead of zillow use austinhomesearch.com it is the austin board of realtor site and has the most accurate listings. Zillow is often out of date.

Going to disagree on that one. I’d put it number two behind Bowie. If working downtown southwest Austin is worth a look as well. The elementary and middle schools are good, unlike what you said about there being a few that are so-so in the Anderson area. Although the Asian community isn’t as large.

Record highs during hottest month vs. avg. high is more appropriate. Also, let's consider humidity because that can make things just as miserable.

us news ranks anderson 126, bowie 152.

looking at other sites, the relative rankings are similar.

The exact rankings dont matter, but the relative rankings are probably something like

LASA
westlake
westwood (virtual tie)
vandegrift

Then depending on the particular ranking criteria the following schools tend to be similar.
cedar park
Lake travis
anderson
bowie
mcallum
mcneil
RRISD
