So, has anyone had any experience retrofitting a house to utilize zoned AC?

Our house is not large (~2400 sf), but is two stories with one thermostat and we have a devil of a time balancing the cooling/heating during the various seasons of the year (well, the hot season and the not-hot season, anyway). We end up going through the house and increasing or decreasing some duct dampers, as well as increasing/decreasing some register openings. It works 'okay' (most of the time),but is a royal nuisance.

We are contemplating replacing our 20 y/o AC system and would like to consider switching to some sort of zoned system with two (or three?) thermostats. This seems to likely be more cost-efficient than putting in two smaller units, but I am not sure at the efficiency pros and cons. And the engineering issues with creating a zoned system are not insignificant, based on my limited research.

If anyone has done this, do you have any comments or success/failure stories with local contractors?
