-- $200 million 'Domain-like development' destined for Round Rock - CultureMap Austin

Although its the first I'm hearing it, it sounds like this has been an idea for awhile now:

I love Domain, I believe it makes Austin really stand out and I haven't seen any other development that could match it in size.. but I fear a second Domain might hurt the first one. Do we really have the gravity to pull more commercial activity of its kind without damaging the original Domain? I'm pretty sure the condos will thrive, but not sure about the businesses.

It'll be fine. This development is about 20% of the size of the Domain. To put it in perspective, just the retail and restaurant square footage (excluding hotel and residential) of the Domain is almost a million sq ft - on 300+ acres.

The RR site is 60 acres and will have a million sq ft INCLUDING residential.

It says it will be in Round Rock, not Austin. So why should it bother any Austinites?
Round Rock is not Austin.
Just hope it doesn’t get overrun with that crazy scooter “culture”.

I despise the Domain and only go there if I absolutely have to but I doubt that a smaller, mixed-use Domain-like development in RR will have any effect on it. The entire region is growing and there are plenty of people to support more retail.

The RR development won't be last Domain-like development in the area either.

mini dense downtowns are the future of all cities. It will relieve congestion by allowing people to have amenities that dont require a commute. The domain should primarily service those in a small radius around it and should not be a destination for the region.

Regardless, this is a free market. There is no central planning authority that is making these decisions. If it hurts the domain, who cares?

Every single mixed use development is being called “the next domain.” I’ve heard the development in cedar park being called the same thing.

Pretty sure nothing in the works now will be much like the Domain.
The idea of 40+ tennis courts at the development in Cedar Park is interesting, I suppose.
