Personally I observe quite a few similarities when looking at DC vs Baltimore and Austin vs San Antonio, and DC vs Baltimore is the closest analogy I can use when I try to describe Austin vs San Antonio to people back East. Austin / DC has the government, politics, high tech, more transplants while Baltimore / San Antonio is more traditionally blue collar, has the deeper history, more affordable etc.
Orlando to Tampa is another analogous situation comparable to Austin/San Antonio. They're 90 miles apart (DC to Baltimore are only about 35-40 miles apart and share lots of suburbs in Maryland). Tampa is more blue collar, Orlando has Service/Tourism/Technology. They're both very transplant heavy, but Orlando moreso because up until around 50 years ago, was largely a cowtown. The only significant size town between the two is Lakeland, but there's a lot of development along I-4, although not to the degree of I-35 between SA and Austin.

SA and Austin metro should be combined since one starts where the other one ends.

It may not be as clear cut as being on 35 and feeling that shift from SA to Austin when you head past San Marcos, but if you've lived in the area for a long time you can kind of get that shift as you hit Marble Falls, or at least I do.

I agree. San Antonio has subdivisions along 281 all the way to 306 and through Canyon Lake. From Canyon you transition into Wimberly. Turning 281 into a freeway all the way to Blanco County line will just increase the development and as density.

And you can’t tell when you get to Austin, it all blends together?

Not sure how you got to Wimberly from 281?

I think it would be less ambiguous had the southern suburbs grown like the northern suburbs. With that said, San Marcos and New Braunfels are growing at breakneck speed. If it continues at this rate for the next ten years, it will be inevitable!
