I'm so thankful for all the responses.

I wish we had more than 2 days and but this was an add-on, or more aptly, a pre-add-on to the wedding in Del Rio.

I shocked the weather will be so hot but that's the desert for you. We'll play the hikes by ear.

Will we see anything close to the amazing star display in Marathon?

Thanks!

Weather not too bad, mid to upper 90's in Terlingua (desert floor):

Chiso Basin (higher elevation) is in mid to upper 80's, warmer than Austin but remember it's a very dry heat and the nights are in the low 50's.

I have never been to Marathon (or if I was there in the 70s/80s, I blinked), but the night sky in Big Bend is phenomenal. Again, if you had more time, the McDonald observatory is a must of astronomer types....

I have only passed through Marathon on my way to or from BB and it was always during the day. BB is in the top 10 of the best places to star gaze in the USA. Im just sayin ; )

About the night gazing, Big Bend has the best night gazing in the whole USA as it's the largest area without lights.

When I was there, I took my family out into the middle of the desert on a cool night. We brought a blanket and put it on the desert sand and looked up at the night sky. It was magical and wonderful.

The great thing about Big Bend is it's National Park land, so you can go and hike off anywhere you want. I loved that about that, since in Texas so much land is private you don't just get to go off and explore. In Big Bend you can explore everywhere!

Big Bend is so underrated in every aspect.

Agreed. We go once a year in October and camp in the Chisos Basin. The views during the day are amazing and the stars at night are, as you put it, magical. It's one of my favorite places and I have been to many.

I went last memorial day too. it was abnormally warm but it was abnormally warm everywhere in Texas for a few weeks last may and early June. I definitely recommend going up to the Mcdonald observatory for a night show (You'll need to get tickets ahead of time online) it was spectacular and so much cooler. We stayed at a very nice newly constructed hotel in Alpine which was very close for our hikes and the observatory excursion.

When we stayed at the Gage in March, we did star gazing just down the road (you can walk). There's a little motel/campground place just down the street with a gentleman who has a huge telescope and even bigger knowledge. He does stargazing every night. Really neat guy too. The folks at the Gage can tell you where it is.

The heat is no joke. 100 degrees here today. Tayloring our hikes accordingly.

The pool at the Gage is a welcome oasis.
