How much cooler up in the mountains? In midday the mountains are the best place. In the morning or night the lower valley.

I've seen fire updates through their social media. Almost 1300 acres burning. Looks like the road to Santa Elena is closed. So sad to lose some of the historic Castolon buildings.

Terribly sad news about the Castolon store! I’m real sad to hear about this. The amazing photograph collection on the walls inside is most likely irreplaceable.

Hubby and I visit Big Bend yearly, usually some time between Nov - Feb. A cold ice cream on a picnic table under the patio outside the store is always a great treat after a hike. Oh how sad to think of the barracks gone now.

Not sure if you are still in the park, but there is a very little-known unit of Big Bend NP in Study Butte that is accessed behind Big Bend Resort, with an amazing trail called Indian Head that takes you to an amazing collection of petroglyphs. It’s a very easy trail and you’ll rarely see anybody else there. If you have time I highly recommend checking it out.
