Galindo chips were delicious tortilla chips found in HEBs, nuch better than Doritos or Tostitos. When I returned to Texas, I tried to find them but they were gone. El Milagro tortillas taste very good and remind me of the Galindo chips. Anyone know what happened?

They were very popular at one time, El Galindo and El Lago being the two local Austin brands of Tortilla chips. El Lago's are definitely still around and they are very good IMO (although a bit salty; you'd want a low-salt guac or even just a plain avocado to enjoy with them).

I could have sworn that El Galindo went away then came back a few years ago... but perhaps they are gone again.

I remember the factory used to be over at 1601 E 6th St. The founder, Tomas Galindo, Sr., passed away in 1986 and his two sons continued to run the business for awhile.

I vaguely remember hearing that the company was being bought up by another tortilla chip manufacturer. I wonder if it was El Lago, which is located at 1700 East 4th Street? That is only 2 blocks from the El Galindo location.

El Milagro is local too! Been around since 1950, they are located at 910 E. 6th Street, so also close to Galindo.

Googling produces results for Galindo chips up to 2007. I have neighbors who will know what happened. The trademark for the logo name was cancelled in 2010.

thanks everyone for your rapid fire responses! I found the Milagro tortillas at the Central Market here in SA. There are very few HEBs or other stores that carry them. They are delicious. HEB brand corn tortillas' recipe changed a few years back. They now smell like dirty feet and taste like cardboard. Milagro tortillas are a long drive to get to, but I always try and buy some when I'm in that part of town where Central Market is.

Wasn't it the Galindo factory that burned down?

Pretty sure your right trainwreck. Burned down and they built a new factory. That building (the factory) is now Arnold Oil.

Walmart here sells the El Milagro tortillas. They are really good.

The chips, however, are way too thin. You can't really use them with guac or queso, and the bag ends up as mostly chip fragments pretty quick.

I used to like El Galindo, too. I have been being El Milagro because they are the easiset local brand to find, but I stopped. they are too thin and sharp and I have scrathced my throat and/or choked on them several times. With 2 kiddoes, that's the last thing I need.

The best tortilla chips other than homemade are Leal's. Central Market carries them. Also, check out HEB bakery made fresh tortilla chips. Those are actually really good. Don't have a shelf life beyond a day or so but they are great.
