Hi,

I am moving to Austin next week with my two kids and two dogs. My kids are 15 and 16 and Ive done some research and think that I would like to get them in the Anderson High school area. We have a temporary hotel until the 5th of August and after that we need a place. I am hoping to buy a super cheap house (and car). We would like to switch from a temporary hotel to a temporary house for the dogs after the 11th of August. We are moving from overseas and I just need advice. We want to start the new school year. Please help!

Whats your budget? Have you researched the cost of living in that area? That’s a great part of Austin, but it can be a bit pricey.

Unfortunately my budget is about 350,000. We’ve seen a few things on zillow and the like. They go fast.

More worried about getting a temporary place for me and my two kids and two dogs. How can I make sure they can be enrolled in high school?

If you are in a hotel you will qualify under the “Project Help” program which is for housing insecure families. This means, living in a hotel, shelter, transitional housing and shelter (as well as literally homeless in a car, camping, streets.” You will just need to bring all your paperwork you usually need (outside if proof if address) and you can enroll you kids.

Why not rent yourself for a bit? The Anderson vertical team can be challenging and may not be the best fit for your kids. And where us work for you? Is that area a reasonable commute? Have you tried that drive from that Anderson area?

And the other obvious question would be : "Why Anderson?" Programs? Rating? Sports teams?

In other words, there might be suitable options that wouldn't be Anderson ; but would be otherwise easier/cheaper than being so limited geographically.

here is the anderson high school zone.

Moderator cut: link removed, competitor site

350K will get you a pretty decent condo in northwest hills which you can rent out later for about $1.5/sq ft.

You can use austinhomesearch.com also and put in anderson high and it will only show you homes in the anderson zone.

Im seeing the vast majority of homes that meet your criteria are condo units in northwest hills. Im seeing 1800 sq ft for 332K for example that feeds into doss/murch/anderson.

Some of the condos like on valleyside are cute row houses which I love. They are 1700 sq ft and run about 330K too.

There is one house near amherst and duval. That is pretty close to the where the new apple campus is being built on parmer.

Thanks for the suggestions! We are here now (3 days) and starting to look with an agent. It’s brutal! Haven’t found much so far. I think we have to readjust our expectations.
