You are correct. Defunding led to deinstitutionalization. The criminal system has unfortunately become a de facto "institution" for the mentally ill. Terrible situation.

The deinstitutionalization of the California state supported mental hospitals/facilities began in the early 1960s at the behest of the psychiatrist association that claimed they could control their patients’ behavior with the new “wonder drugs” developed in the 1950s. The psychiatrists claimed that as a result, involuntary commitment was unnecessary and not desirable (many state-run mental facilities were hellholes by today’s standards).

The politicians were only too happy to acquiesce to the medical experts advice and emptied those facilities out to save many millions in taxpayer money. That process spread to the rest of the country over the next two decades. Look no further than the professionals themselves who vastly overstated what they could do with the mentioned new drug treatments.

Add to the the public tide against institutions after 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' book and movie. That's unfortunate since those with the severest (possibly impossible) cases would be best served by this option.

Yes, they did.

They certainly support every effort to make the government bigger and more powerful. They support every conceivable restriction on our lives and seek to increase taxes at every opportunity.

Private prisons handle a very small portion of our prisoners.

In 2016, 128,000 of 1,500,000 state and federal prisoners were in private facilities. That's only 8.5%, so I hardly believe that private prisons are the problem.

They need to get bigger in their over site of corporations, begin the dismantling of corporations and holding repeat offenders accountable. Otherwise I am good.

This video is about as shallow and shortsided an explanation as blaming local leadership for the opioid epidemic in the Midwest and Appalachia, and it's the only source I've ever seen whenever people try to claim local progressive policy somehow causes homelessness.

Tent cities obviously aren't the answer, and I'm pretty disappointed in Austin for such a shallow approach, but neither are one-way bus tickets. If these people are truly hopeless, what policies do you propose to mitigate the situation?

Did you watch the video? And why did you mention Sinclair?
