I think with all the new video cameras people have installed outside of their homes these days, approaching cars in neighborhoods in driveways would be risky in terms of getting caught. Maybe not, but it's a lot different now than 10-15 years ago when fewer people had exterior security cameras on their homes.

If it's roving gangs looking for stuff to pawn for drug money, cars aren't going to be the most lucrative targets, it would seem. If it's just some random meth head looking for a quick and easy theft and hoping for change or bills, that's different. Still a pain in the butt to have your car rifled, or your window smashed, even if there's nothing in it.

I kind of doubt its gangs. Kind of. Probably just a common petty thief. I probably do need to invest in a remote signal jammer though. I didn't think I would really need one but I guess it's better safe than sorry.

There's one currently operating in central Austin who appears homeless and sits in cars for hours at a time, smoking cigarettes and leaving the butts in the cars. He doesn't seem remotely concerned about getting caught, and people have been capturing his antics on their security cameras for quite some time now.
