For the OP I think you will find much the same dilemma here that you have in the bay area, just with prices and salaries slid down the scale some. Owning cheap, nice, and close in doesn't really exist anymore in Austin. If you don't like the affordable areas of California I don't think you will like the affordable areas of Texas or even the Austin metro either.
california is very different than the bay area. There are lots of affordable areas in california but nothing in the bay area.

I agree. Not sure what from my post implied that I didn't? Last time I was in the Bay Area a couple of years ago my Uber driver informed me that many people are commuting from as far away as Sacramento.

Personally I love the scenery, climate and geographical variety of California, especially the Sierra foothills and western slope. However I don't think I would ever live there due to other concerns.

Yes, the OP could keep their current teaching license and just more to Fresno, Sacramento, Salinas, anywhere in the Inland Empire.

Thanks all. The OP has reasons for not moving to some of the California cities you mentioned. Austin is no longer on my radar thanks to this discussion. Really value your input about Austin, cost of living, and political climate.

Ha! The last quote about the sex ed curriculum cracks me up - some of those statements are complete bunk but have been making the rounds in the opposition propaganda. What is that from, out of curiosity? As an aside, it seems anecdotally (based on the parents FB groups for my kids schools) that there is a significant amount of support for the sex ed curriculum. I have reviewed a good bit of it, although there is no way to put ALL the approved material into the teaching, there is just too much, so teachers will have to chose somehow. We have a good friend that is a health teacher and she suspects some additional guidance will be forwarded to them.

So glad we could answer your questions appropriately. I'm also glad you're taking them to heart and not coming in the summer with savings hoping that you'll get a job and then be stuck without one.

Right? That’d be a total bummer! That’s why I’m inquiring now. That’d be terribly risky to move to another city or state without a job in place. And yes, some of the detailed and straight up honest responses were really helpful. Thanks Austin! I do hear your city and people are super lovely!

just did an internet search for abstinence sex ed. You can probably google search the quote to find the source. Probably a religious group.

Don't need it in my search history, will result in weird ads

But that said, some groups are stridently opposed to teaching kids basic anatomy because, you know, that is bad and stuff. It is better if they just use goofy nicknames and such, I suppose.

While my job here is wonderful, I’m coming to terms with the realization that it will be nearly impossible as a single person to buy anywhere in my area. Some areas of CA are still somewhat affordable, but they’re not necessarily places I’d want to live for personal reasons.

I’m wondering how the CA teaching credential transfers to Texas. Or does it? I am really interested in Austin (aren’t we all???) I’m wondering how saturated the field for experienced special educators there is... and if a CA credential would be accepted there? Also, it looks like a typical special Ed teaching salary there hovers between 50 and 60,000. Is that a reasonable salary to live and possibly even eventually buy in or just outside Austin?

Current salary in SF Area is nearing 100,000 which is comfortable, but not enough to do anything other than rent a studio or one bed here near my work. Pretty sad. Living further away wouldn’t be worth it due to the insane traffic. I’d expect a serious pay cut if I move, but willing to do so if I’d have the ability to buy at some point.

Anyone know about CA teachers finding work in Texas and what the pay is (roughly) for a dual credentialed (over 75 units past BA) and 14 plus years experience?

This is very specific to teachers, and I’d really value your input. I’m unfortunately priced out of my home state and it’s time to relocate.

Thanks,

Lo
Houston, DFW and San Antonio are also desirable cities in our state.
