I can't really comment on what Dallas was like in 1969 because I was born in '85, but I think the stereotype about Dallasites caring about money isn't completely accurate. Sure there are parts of town where that is true, but we are a huge metroplex with all types of people. It's a shame people can't see past that and just judge the city based on a stereotype.

Even coming home from visiting up there, at night lying on the floor in the back of a VW van, I could tell when we got close to Austin because the air smelled different - cleaner. Life as more relaxed and not so money driven as Dallas, you would even then see people in line at the really fancy restaurant in town waiting to get in in jeans and boots alongside someone in a fancy gown for going to the opera (yes, there was opera), and no one cared. Wouldn't find that in Dallas by a long shot, not then. But Dallas looked down on Austin because it wasn't all about the money.

Not so much any more. But the rivalry goes on, just like family feuds.
This is much like the way people in San Francisco and Los Angeles trade barbs at each other.

Having spent most of my life in the DFW area, it seems like most people here like Austin more than they do Dallas. I'm generalizing of course, but I'm really not sure why people think there is a 'rivalry' when it really jsut seems to be only coming from the Austin side.

None of the Texas cities are rivals with Austin, that I know of. Most everybody from all over Texas loves Austin. Most or nearly most of the Native and non-Native Texan's favorite city in Texas is Austin. Austin is a very promiscuous city. It's where many people love to go and play and have fun and do things they can't do in their own hometown. Most anything goes. What happens in Austin stays in Austin. It's kinda like the Las Vegas of Texas without the glitz, glamour and theme park casino gambling.

I've experienced a ton of Austin hate in College Station and some in San Antonio.

Definitely! Austin gets no love in SA and of course, I'd expect none from College Station. The "don't Dallas my Austin" attitude peaked around 2010 or so. Now, I mainly hear it from newcomers who are trying to fit in.

I don't know how it was in 2010, but it definitely felt very alive and well when I lived in Austin from 2015-17, and I'm not sure if it was just isolated to newcomers.

It's not identical, but the two cities felt extremely similar to me. It probably helps that both cities are getting a huge influx of transplants from the same cities/states, and both Dallas and Austin also seem to share a lot of the same establishments.

What I had in mind are the large number of people who come to Austin with the intention of hooking up with somebody outside the the "spouse or significant other" relationship. There's also alot of people who will bring or meet up with their secret lover in Austin as a quick get-away for some fun, relaxation and alone time.

Downtown Austin 78701 zip code has more bars and night clubs located in it than any other zip code in the United States

http://austin.culturemap.com/news/re...n-the-country/

With all the bars in downtown Austin and the alcohol flowing so freely and people becoming more inebriated and more un-inhibited as the night goes on, it can get very tempting to hook up with a stranger and nobody's gonna find out. To quote Chris Rock - men are as loyal as their options.

All the ingredients reek with promiscuity.

Like I said in the post you quoted me, Austin is a very promiscous city.

That link measures bars 'per capita' which is an important distinction to make. If you're only basing this off of how many bars per capita a city has, that means Springfield, Massachusetts would be the second most promiscous city..lol.
