Hi all,

I have a daughter who is graduate student at UT-Austin currently in an apartment in Hyde Park area. She's finding that area north of university too quiet. I told her I would do some research on fun, lively, safe areas not too far from downtown and close to restaurants, bars, shops so this is my research--asking you nice folks. lol. (I'm out of state.)

Anyone have some great apartments to recommend in South Austin that might be better choice for young mid-20's?

She only has to be at university 2 or 3 times per week, mostly clinical work off campus so not imperative to be too close to UT.

Is Barton Hills-Zilkr a good area for grad students and young professionals?

Any first hand knowledge of specific areas and/or apartment complexes on the nicer side would be appreciated. Her budget is $1200-1500 per month for a studio or 1 bdrm. Thank you.

South Congress, just north of Oltorf, up to about Riverside. She can find a studio or 1BR in that price range. It's close to all that's "happening", but not in the dead center of it.

What does “lively” mean? I find Hyde Park to be pretty hip and fun myself.

That's what she thought at first, but I guess its proving too quiet.

Lively means near people her own age (23-30) are walking around and there are shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance. She and her friends generally head downtown on weekends, so considering South Austin, but since I can't see it I wondered if there are neighborhoods that would fit the bill without being too grungy or too isolated from access to downtown.

West of UT-A are undergrads and no bars so that's out.

Thank you.

Have her join the “Girls new to Austin” Facebook group. They have a rental subgroup where she might be able to get insight on her own. If Hyde Park wasn’t “lively” enough she needs to live south of the river and north of Ben White (Highway 71).

I would add South Lamar area to her considerations. If she only needs to be on campus 2-3x week, it would work well.
