If your job is to provide constant, uninterrupted power, solar and wind are both a pain because you can't turn them up or down as you need more or less. But this is not a surprise, and it's a problem that everybody (and AE) have been wrestling with for years. It's manageable. The engineer in me is just weary of people thinking we can replace gas or nuclear power with solar panels and wind turbines.
I wasn't referring just to roof-top units, but regardless, solar energy generation increases when peak demand increases. It doesn't need to be uninterrupted and isn't intended to be base-load replacement. It actually works well as 'peak shaving' which can allow AE to (potentially) not kick on additional peaker plants and possibly even avoid having to increase the number of peaking units that need to be built.

This is key IMO. We added solar to our house back in October (Ca resident). We interviewed 5 different companies and got quotes from all 5. One was outrageously high for a mid-level quality panel. The other four were all kind of around the same ball park. And I as narrowing it down to one company as it it still made financial sense based on the quotes i had gotten.
Then one day driving home I see a house in my neighborhood getting panels put on. So I drive by the house. The contractors are installing but I'm not familiar with the company. I talk to the contractor, he tells me about his experience. Gives me the business card of the owner. I call the owner when I get home and this company blows the doors off the other five companies coming in about $6K under the cheapest company i had gotten a quote from. So i bring this information to the other companies. A couple matched and brought their prices down. A couple of the others would not match. I ended up going with the very last company since I got to talk to the contractor on site, see their work on site, talked to the homeowner who was happy with their work.
So yeah, moral of the story is you can interview and get enough quotes from these companies.
From all my interviewing as well, install solar is not rocket science. They all give you the same speech on how they do it the right way, and it will look great and IMO, that is true. These companies these days do it the right way. Maybe this once the case 5-6 years ago or with a lot of lease agreements. So it really comes down to costs as the deciding factor. But it doesn't hurt to actually stop by a house and talk to a homeowner about their install and how things have gone for them.

If you live in an area with high energy rates and a suitable solar rating and can afford the initial investment, it's worth installing solar panels in your home while the 26% tax break is in place — for the good of the environment and your wallet. But don't expect to eliminate your power bill overnight.

So my April bill (billed from Mar 10th - April 8th) was right at $100 for about 915 kWh. My current billing period ends in about 5 days and I'm just shy of 900 kWh and have kept the thermostat at 76 (A/C) during the day and 78 (heat) during the night in a home aproximately 1,850 sqft.
Given the A/C isnt affected by the heating issues I had during the winter I'm 'believing' this will give me a more accurate estimate of how much power I will use during the summer.
I have another estimate by ION for about $67 per month on a 4.17 kW system and aproximately 6,371 kWh over a 1 year period. That was with 13 panels. To me that system seems kind of weak but thing is I still dont know what my real winter usage will amount to given the HVAC is fixed.
I was thinking a system that size wouldnt eliminate my electric bill though would it?

I'd track your usage for at least a full year when you know all systems are functioning properly, and may consider additional energy-saving options before solar.
I didn't scroll back all the way, so I apologize if this has already been asked - is the entire home electric (water heater, etc)?
Yeah, everything is electric. I also run a server and PC all day and night so that may contribute to it as well.

Heck - not like we have a lot to do these days...
What era is the house and core systems from?
Was built in 2017. Havent done an energy audit. Any particular vendor you recommend for that?

How many sft is your house?
I am too lazy to go look up recent, but here is a years worth of data for our 2400 sf house back in 2015/16. Gas cooking/heating/water, though. 1999 construction, two adults and two kids.

1850 Sqft. Yeah looking at that my usage does seem high. Not sure what's eating up so much power though. I cant help but wonder if my HVAC system is still shorting in some way and if it is given the warranty on it expired in 2018 if I have any recourse if it was related to installation error.
By what you're showing me my usage should be about half of what I'm really using. If that were the case I'm guessing those panels would be enough. I'm home all day lately so the A/C or Heat is running when it's hot or cold outside...

Btw, here is how 915 kWh would be billed in the nearby municipal utilities/co-ops. It is a year or so out of date, but fairly recent:

Yeah that looks about right for my bill as well. Mine is with PEC and came out to $105 specifically. Why is Georgetown higher than the rest of the metro?
