Utah is home of the greatest snow on earth...well I hate snow! It's April 25th and 35 degrees outside and it's snowing!!!

My husband had been begging me for 3 years to move to Austin. I'm finally ready to consider it. I have lots of questions but will continue to read through the forums to find my answers, but have one specific question:

As you are probably aware, there are a large number of Mormons in Utah. I am curious as to the Mormon influence in Austin? Anyone know?

What is the most prevalent religion, if there is one?

I know several Mormons here however not by any means the large numbers you are used to. Know lots of Catholics,Baptist, Methodist etc don't get the impression one is dominant over the others here.

Probably your more protestant religions are more dominant. That's just my guess, but I know all religions are represented here. In Williamson County (at least Eastern) there is only on Mormon Church and that is in Taylor.

Austin isn't really a religiously driven town, so, regardless of your persuation, it would be more an issue of you fitting in with that more secular vibe. Not to say people are not religious here, just that they don't wear it on their sleeve as in other cities. Dallas would be a good example of those other cities. In Austin, you are free to be yourself, be it pagan, vegan, atheist, communist, preacher or thief. Per Mormon communities, they are few and far between in the US, as you know, with Utah, Montana, Idaho, a bit of Colorado, and Vegas being about it. The south proper is certanly not a hotbed for mormons, but neither is most of the USA. Again, the issue is if YOU can adapt to a largely secular city, which I'm sure is the case. If you can accept others here, I'm sure they can deal with your mormon roots, though I'm not aware of any mormon communities. Look in the yellow pages for COJCOLDS churches, that would be the best way.

gemini_chick,

I moved here from Salt Lake City three years ago and LOVE it!!! I too hate snow, the weather here is fantastic. I remember the first year I was here I was amazed that I could wear shorts and flip flops on New Years Day (it was 71 degrees). As others have mentioned, there is not a large LDS population here, although I have seen a couple Mormon churches. Austin is pretty much live and let live. I have never regretted moving here for one second. Another nice thing about moving from Utah to Austin is the cost of living is comparable. Where in Utah do you live? P.S. I think the high temperature here yesterday was 87 degrees.

Default Thanks

Thank you. I don't want to offend anyone, which is why I didn't specify this; but we are looking to move away from Utah because we are NOT Mormon and want to raise our kids learning about all religions and tolerance in general.

When I mentioned our desire to move to Austin, our Mormon neighbors said there is a high concentration of Mormons there...obviously not as much as Utah, but that they have a high membership there. It actually scared me away from Austin for a second, so I thought I'd ask.

We can fit in anywhere, even in Mormon land, but would like to have more diversity in our childrens' lives than my husband and I were raised with.

Thanks for your info.

No problem then, I've never actually met a mormon here. I did see a missionary in a restaurant once. I have no idea what your neighbors are talking about.

I've been to the LDS library here, a couple decades ago, to do genealogical research, but as said earlier, one is very unlikely to know the religious persuasion of 99.9% of the people that one knows here (unless, of course, you're meeting them in church ).

Shouldn't be an issue for you.

There may actually be more in Houston. My S.I.L is Mormon and lives in Katy, and their church is pretty large. I think your neighbors got their cities mixed up. There's not a large population out here. And don't worry, I'm not offended and I'm not Mormon. No matter how many times I tell her I'm not interested in becoming Mormon, she still comes after us But you more than likely won't have interaction with them like that here. We get it from her cause she knows where we live.

You are making me so jealous! We are coming in the summer to look at it. If I give the green light, my husband is right on it.
I live in Sandy. I love the mountains and how beautiful it is here. Ideally, we can rent a condo in Park City for the hot Austin Summers while our kids are out of school. Are the summers really that unbearable? I think my mormon neighbors were mis-informed...or trying to scare me into staying
