I did not realize until very recently that Eanes took out of district transfer students, and there is an Eanes elementary campus (several, actually) about equally distant to our house as the potential new private school my kids would attend if school starts in the fall.

After taking a closer look at class sizes at Eanes elementaries, we've decided to apply for an OOD transfer to Eanes as an alternative plan. There's no guarantee we'd get one, but we'll find out soon. I'd feel better about potential distance learning in the fall if I wasn't paying $2k a month for it--and Eanes might fit the bill for us in any case, longterm, at least for elementary and possibly middle school.

Anyone else do an OOD transfer into Eanes? What was your experience? Austin-Steve, didn't your kids do this for a while?

We have several friends that have done it, and they have been very happy with it. It’s easier if you have others near you doing it so you can carpool...the commute has really been the only issue I’ve heard them mention.

There are only 300-something spots available, and you have to reapply every year. I think there is also a stigma about OOD transfers that I have heard from other parents who transferred in.

I did it with my oldest into the highschool in 2007. Once in it's great, and you just have to transport them.

In 2010 there were rumors of Eanes cutting off the high school spots so I bought a house in Eanes and moved there to ensure our second daughter could attend. Then in her Junio year 2014 we moved back to a more affordable area because they said she would be guaranteed her Senior year to remain. And we sold the house for $200K more than we paid 4 years earlier. So, timing and luck was on our side.

It's probably about the same now, but prices of homes in the area have more than doubled in 10 years in most of Eanes ISD. We had purchased a dumpy 1970s home for about $300K, sold for $500K. It just sold again last year for $775K. Unbelievable. Much of that housing demand is tied to the schools, but you don't have to live there to attend, so go for it.

it will be interesting to see what happens to eanes. as prices get too high families can no longer afford to move there (especially young families). That will cause a hole in elementary school enrollment. Will they suck up the best AISD students?

I think you’re underestimating how much money is in Austin now. We have had some turnover in homes near us...all 7 figure properties. The new owners have all been young families - some are from out of state but they are all young.

I agree. I have seen a ton of young families during our daily walks in our neighborhood. Inventory is low though but the houses that do go on the market seem to sell really quickly.
