I've eaten at Rudy's, on occasion - and it's not terrible, by any means, just not what I think of when I think of great 'cue. But I tend to swing by there more for the breakfast-tacos-in-a-hurry mornings - as you said, reliable and tasty (at least for the kind I get, I can't speak to the more elaborate versions).

BBQ should NOT be high dollar, even if it is not cheap

Absolutely! My son reported back on Hill Country BBQ that opened in New York City a few months ago, just before he moved back to 'cue country. He said they got it spot on, everything was absolutely authentic - except that it's $30 for a plate of 'cue.

I have not made the pilgrimage yet, but I've been told Cooper's in Llano is the holy land of brisket.

I second Cousins in Ft. Worth. I like Mann's and Sam's down here in Austin proper.

Default You Can Breathe Better Here

Which is all the more reason you need to visit Lockhart, the barbecue capital of Texas (or, as I call it, Vatican City), and you can breathe in some of the great smells of real brisket and ribs at the legendary barbecue cookeries there. My personal favorite in Lockhart is Black's, with Kreuz a strong second.

And then you can eat it all, too.

Oh, absolutely, if you must choose from all of the riches, Cooper's in Llano is the only possible choice.

I think I'll just stick to smoking my own Brisket and Pork shoulder. I'm sure my neighbors love it when I get the smoker going for 18 hours. I found that they don't mind when I invite them to eat over.

I even make my own sauce which is awesome but the brisket doesn't need it.

I love it when my neighbor is smoking - it makes the best smell through out the neighborhood...
