Hi,

As mentioned in a recent thread, I'm thinking of adding a ~300 sqft studio in my backyard. As long as it doesn't have a full bath and kitchen, it can be permitted as an accessory structure (as opposed to an accessory dwelling unit). This is supposedly much easier, but it's still not something I know how to tackle myself. I reached out to one firm, who quoted $175/hr * 20 hrs = $3500 to do the work, not including the cost of permits. That sounds crazy to me. Does anyone know of a way to do it for less?

Thanks!

If you don't need a variance, you might try doing it yourself. A competent builder should be able to pull a permit pretty easily - do you already have plans?

It's being built by a shed builder who's been building sheds for decades but only recently getting into finishing them out. He's never had to do permitting work before.
